Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA are working on a seriously massive game, and we will soon learn much more about it.
The new trailer revealed far more about the game than anything we had seen before. Stranger Than Heaven is set across five different eras – with sections taking place in 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965 – and its story will unfold across five different Japanese cities. According to Masayoshi Yokoyama, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s representative director and executive producer, they still cannot say much beyond what was shown, but as you can imagine, five cities and five eras make for a huge undertaking. The developers are putting tremendous care into bringing these time periods and locations to life, especially because they feel games rarely explore them properly. It genuinely looks like a unique experience you are unlikely to find anywhere else.
We also got a brief but intense look at the game’s brutal, highly dynamic combat system, showing off weapons, grappling, one-against-many brawls, and environmental interactions. This marks a whole new level of combat design for the studio, and what we saw was only the tip of the iceberg, with much more still to come. Beyond that, we caught glimpses of tram travel through the cities, possible romances, and, in classic Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio fashion, beautifully rendered food. All of it was backed by an incredible jazz-drumming soundtrack – music has already become a key part of every Stranger Than Heaven trailer so far. Yokoyama says these tracks really get your feet moving, and there is still much more to hear, including some of his personal favorites that have not yet appeared.
It also looked like a few familiar faces showed up among the cast, but Yokoyama would not reveal exactly who they are or what role they play. The trailer footage was not exactly subtle, though, and he did tease that players can expect a true all-star lineup. The team is eager to show more during the upcoming Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven broadcast. It will air on May 6 at 4:00 p.m. PT, which is May 7 at 1:00 a.m. in Hungary, and it will take a deeper dive into many of the features teased today – plus plenty we have not seen yet.
Stranger Than Heaven is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It does not have a release date yet. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
