The Japanese company may have dropped some rather sly hints about which game will become the next Resident Evil remake. Fans believe that several small details in Resident Evil Requiem point directly toward a new version of Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
Capcom is in excellent form right now, and the Resident Evil brand feels bigger than ever. Resident Evil Requiem recently became the fastest-selling game in the franchise, and many already see it as the highest-rated entry of the last twenty years. At the same time, rumors about another remake have continued to circulate, and those have already been widely discussed. Talk of a Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake has been around for quite a while, and now fans believe that a few subtle details in Resident Evil Requiem may be teasing exactly that. Capcom, of course, has a habit of doing this sort of thing.
Players have picked out several details that they think point toward a Code Veronica remake. In the bar at Rhodes Hill, for example, there is a bottle marked “AVERNICO.” Rearranging those letters gives you “Veronica.” On top of that, the newly added photo mode allows players to zoom in on the guestbook at the Wrenwood Hotel, where it can be seen that Alyssa Ashcroft was the hotel’s ninth guest. There is even an entry in the book under the name Veronica. That second clue may feel a little forced, but the first one is much harder to dismiss as a coincidence.
It would not be the first time Capcom has scattered hints in this way. Before Resident Evil Requiem was officially announced, the company had already shared social media images featuring signs arranged in a way that appeared to form the Roman numeral IX, or nine. Because of that, many fans now believe that a Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake is close to being a certainty. Expectations will not be low either. After the quality of Resident Evil 4 Remake, Capcom has set the bar very high for itself. Code Veronica, originally released in 2000, also gives the developer plenty of room for a more ambitious and modern reinterpretation. The real question is whether Capcom can live up to the hype, though it is obviously still too early to say anything definitive on that front.
