A New Look at One of 2026’s Biggest Open-World Fantasy RPGs: Mortal Shell 2’s Dark World Looks Brutal in Never-Before-Seen Gameplay [VIDEO]

Cold Symmetry and PlayStack take players through grotesque environments and deadly combat in a trailer running close to 12 minutes. And that is not the only thing the developers had lined up for today, because they also confirmed that the open-world game will receive a physical edition for PlayStation 5. So Mortal Shell 2 did not just return with fresh gameplay, but with another meaningful update as well. That alone is enough to put it firmly on the radar of dark fantasy fans.

Encounters with grotesque creatures, exploration across devastated maps, and the constant feeling that death is always one step away. That is what Cold Symmetry and PlayStack are channeling in a new Mortal Shell 2 gameplay video that offers a deeper look at its dark fantasy universe and its RPG-flavored combat mechanics. And this is not the only piece of news the developers prepared for today, because they have also confirmed that the open-world game will have a physical edition for PS5.

The gameplay footage, shared on PlayStack’s YouTube channel, shows some of the many challenges players will face when they get their hands on Mortal Shell 2 at some point in 2026. We are talking about nearly 12 minutes packed with strategically placed enemies designed to frustrate the player, hideous NPCs who trigger side quests, and environments where life has been drained so completely that only soulless monsters remain.

Possession of Fallen Warriors in a World Left in Ruins

As for its premise, Mortal Shell 2 invites fans of soulslike games and dark fantasy action experiences to explore a ruined universe and possess the corpses of exceptional warriors who have fallen in battle. In doing so, players will be able to unlock each fighter’s unique abilities, combine them into different combat styles, and piece together fragments of lore through their lost memories.

Cold Symmetry and PlayStack are building on the first Mortal Shell by expanding the original experience with faster and more ruthless combat, brutal executions worthy of any God of War game, and a wide variety of weapons capable of growing stronger through upgrades. On top of that, players will now enjoy unprecedented freedom within the franchise by exploring a “compact open world” filled with abominable beasts and hidden secrets.

Alongside the trailer reveal, the developers of Mortal Shell 2 also announced that the game will receive a physical version for PS5, published by Meridiem. That means more than a few players will be able to place the latest project from Cold Symmetry and PlayStack on their shelves as soon as it becomes available later in 2026.
