HBO Will Wait on Baldur’s Gate as Craig Mazin Focuses on Finishing The Last of Us

MOVIE NEWS – HBO does not want Craig Mazin leading two major video game adaptations at the same time, so the Baldur’s Gate series is not expected to move forward in a serious way until The Last of Us reaches its conclusion.

Streaming platforms have become the main home for live-action adaptations of video games, and HBO currently has two major projects in that space: The Last of Us and Baldur’s Gate. The network, however, has no intention of overlapping the two productions in a way that could hurt the quality of its adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit series. Casey Bloys, head of HBO, has now made it clear that the Dungeons & Dragons-based show is unlikely to arrive before the very end of the decade.

Craig Mazin has already played a central role in The Last of Us as showrunner, creator, writer, and director alongside Neil Druckmann, with key contributions from names such as Peter Hoar and Halley Wegryn Gross. But with Druckmann stepping away from the adaptation to focus on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Mazin is now carrying an even heavier share of the creative burden. Because of that, HBO has decided not to push him into juggling another production of similar scale at the same time.

The Last of Us remains the clear priority

Speaking to Radio Times, Bloys said that Mazin is very passionate about Baldur’s Gate and that conversations have already taken place, but the immediate focus remains on The Last of Us. The idea is to delay meaningful pre-production work on Baldur’s Gate for as long as necessary and only let that project take center stage once Ellie’s story on television has been brought to a close.

That naturally raises another question: how much longer will The Last of Us continue? As things stand, production on season three began in March 2026 and its premiere is expected in 2027. Season two only covered part of the story of The Last of Us Part II, so the third season is likely to take on Abby and Lev’s arc as well as the epilogue. With no third game currently available to adapt, it is becoming increasingly plausible that the series itself could end there.

Baldur’s Gate is still alive, just not moving fast

That does not mean the Baldur’s Gate series is stalled beyond recovery. Mazin remains attached to lead the production, while former Wizards of the Coast figure Chris Perkins is on board as a consultant. Mazin has already established contact with Larian Studios, but the Belgian developer is not directly involved in the making of the series. The current plan is for the adaptation to take place after the events of the 2023 RPG.

So HBO’s position is fairly simple: it does not want to split the attention of the person currently responsible for bringing The Last of Us to a finish. The Baldur’s Gate adaptation is still in the works, but the network is in no rush to force it forward – and that patience may end up helping the final result.
