MOVIE NEWS – Intense anticipation is surrounding the release of Michael, the film intended to portray Michael Jackson’s unparalleled life story. The latest industry forecasts suggest that the production, backed by Lionsgate and producer Graham King (Bohemian Rhapsody), could set a new revenue record among musical biopics.
Industry estimates say the film could generate between $80 million and $90 million in North America during its opening weekend. That would be an outstanding result for the genre: 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody opened with $51 million, while 2022’s Elvis started with $31 million overseas. If the production reaches the expected figures, it could enter film history as the biggest opening ever for a musical biopic.
International expectations are even more optimistic. Because of Michael Jackson’s global popularity and his impact on pop culture, distributors are expecting enormous interest. Analysts believe the film has a realistic chance of crossing the $1 billion worldwide mark, something no musical biographical production has managed before.
The outlook is therefore strong, which may reassure the studio, because the risk was considerable. Michael cost more than $155 million to produce, and that figure does not yet include the significant marketing expenses. In practical terms, this means the film needs to earn at least $400 million worldwide in order to become profitable – but expectations are set much higher than that.
