Halo’s legacy continues to evolve as Unreal Engine 5 and a potential PlayStation 5 debut stir debate among fans. Could this be a turning point for the franchise?
Halo is making a massive comeback, with new updates for Halo Infinite and the announcement that future games will adopt Unreal Engine 5.
The latest update for Halo Infinite celebrates the legendary Halo 2, introducing new Spartan customizations inspired by Master Chief and Arbiter. It also features a third-person Firefight mode and a multiplayer experience that mirrors Halo 2’s gameplay.
Unreal Engine 5: A new chapter for Halo
The real headline, however, is the use of Unreal Engine 5. Halo Studios unveiled stunning visuals of Master Chief in his Mark V armor from Halo: Combat Evolved, hinting at a possible remake that could reboot the series after its narrative struggles under 343 Industries.
Adding fuel to the speculation is the possibility of a PlayStation 5 release for the next Halo game, a topic that has sparked rumors for years. Speaking to Bloomberg, Xbox head Phil Spencer said, “It’s too early to determine the future of our first-party games on other platforms.” He added, “I do not see sort of red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not’” when discussing Xbox IPs potentially coming to PS5 or Nintendo Switch. While this doesn’t confirm Halo’s migration to Sony’s console, it certainly leaves the door open.
Should Halo remain an Xbox exclusive?
In the past, the thought of Halo on PlayStation was inconceivable. However, Xbox’s recent strategy has leaned toward broader platform availability, possibly in response to fierce hardware competition with Sony. Hardcore fans argue that Halo belongs exclusively on Xbox and PC, but others are warming up to the idea, especially given the declining quality of the latest entries.
