Josh Sawyer would rather do something else, and even though Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment’s next game, is set in the world of Pillars of Eternity, he’d rather do something else later.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire was a great CRPG that continued the legacy of the Infinity Engine games and did a great job of mixing old school with modern. However, if you look at its sales, it didn’t do very well. This left a bad taste in director Josh Sawyer’s mouth. Sawyer was burned out and didn’t like the community funding model either, which led Obsidian to take a more conservative approach to fundraising.
Sawyer didn’t direct anything until Pentiment, and he’s not directing Avowed, but he does help the team. He talked about it in an interview with RPG Site: “I’m helping with Avowed. I am still in an advisory role, but I have done a little bit of writing on Avowed. I helped out with some system design and stuff like that. Basically anywhere they needed help. I do more hands-on work there and then just think and talk about ideas for future projects.
I think if it was really an unlimited budget, I think I would try to do Pillars [of Eternity] 3, because I know what the budget was for [Pillars of Eternity 2:] Deadfire, which wasn’t a whole lot, and I’ve heard from several people what the budget was for Baldur’s Gate 3, and I’m not going to talk about numbers, but if I got that budget, sure, I’ll do Pillars 3. I feel like Avowed is where the Pillars universe has kind of gone now. And it’ll be interesting to see where the audience picks up on that, and maybe that’s where the Pillars universe will kind of go in the future. So I think there’s a lot of different possibilities of what to do in the future. I think I am necessarily more interested in doing original IP than existing IP. But we’ll see where the future takes me,” Sawyer said.
So he would rather do a new IP…
