“Everything is explorable and achievable.” Randy Pitchford, the father of Borderlands 4, promises the most ambitious and open game in the franchise’s history. “In Borderlands 4, everything you see is a playable space accessible without loading times,” says Pitchford.
The anticipation for Borderlands 4 continues to grow among fans of the looter shooter genre, and for good reason. After years of waiting, the next installment in Gearbox’s iconic franchise aims to redefine the series with groundbreaking innovations and mechanics. Randy Pitchford, the mind behind the Borderlands saga, has shared exciting details that highlight why this game might be the most ambitious entry yet.
In an interview with Gamespot, Pitchford discussed the 2025 release of Borderlands 4, describing it as the most open and expansive game in the franchise’s history. However, he clarified that the game should not be categorized as open world. “Borderlands 4 is the most open and free of all the games in the franchise. Everything you see is a playable space you can access without any loading time. All environments, scenes, and areas are fully explorable and accessible,” he explained.
Despite not embracing the typical open-world label, Pitchford emphasized that the game world is massive and packed with content. “I wouldn’t call it open world because that term implies certain expectations that don’t align with us. But Borderlands 4 is expansive, larger than anything we’ve done before, and brimming with content like never before,” he added. The interview speculated that the game’s structure might resemble the semi-open design of God of War (2018).
The game also promises deeper RPG elements that expand the gameplay experience. “Our challenge is to push RPG elements to new heights while staying true to what makes Borderlands unique,” Pitchford noted.
Facing Competition from GTA 6
The looming release of GTA 6 casts a shadow over the industry, and even Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Gearbox, is making strategic decisions for Borderlands 4‘s launch. Pitchford revealed that development on the game began even before the release of Borderlands 3. “Chronologically, we started work on Borderlands 4 before we shipped Borderlands 3. After its release, some of the team moved on to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and later, many of them joined the Borderlands 4 development team,” he explained.
Additionally, there have been rumors of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2, which align with the studio’s plans, especially considering the success of the original spin-off in both sales and critical reception.
For fans eagerly awaiting Borderlands 4, this title promises to be an evolution of the franchise, offering a vast, content-rich world and innovative gameplay mechanics that could set new standards for the series.
