Shadow of the Road: Experience Japan in 1868

Another Angle and Owlcat Games have confirmed that their turn-based RPG will arrive sometime this year.

Shadow of the Road is a story-driven, turn-based RPG set in a world where feudal Japan collides with magic and machinery. Players assemble a party from a diverse cast of characters and put their tactical skills to the test against yōkai and steampunk contraptions. Through meaningful choices, the story allows players to reshape not only their own journey, but the fate of an entire empire.

The game is set in Japan in 1868, during a brutal civil war between the traditionalist forces of Shogun Tokugawa and the technologically superior army of Emperor Mutsuhito, supported by the British East Nippon Company. Warriors, spies, and mystical beings traverse a land where magic and machines coexist, and ancient temples stand beside towering steam-powered constructs.

At the heart of the narrative lies a daring mission led by Tokugawa’s spymaster. He recruits the ronin Satoru and Akira to protect a mysterious boy who possesses immense and uncontrollable power. Along the way, new allies join the group, each carrying their own pasts and motivations. Player decisions shape relationships, forging new bonds, breaking old ones, or healing fractured family ties.

Shadow of the Road features classic turn-based combat enhanced with samurai-inspired tactical elements. Each character brings unique skills, personal goals, and emotional connections that can influence the outcome of encounters. Mastering both the strategic and social layers of the game is essential to dominating the battlefield.

The game is scheduled to launch on PC later this year. No console versions have been announced.

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
