Pre-alpha images have surfaced from Ubisoft’s unfortunately scrapped remake.
As tensions remain high around Ubisoft, with more layoffs looming and employee unions openly urging CEO Yves Guillemot to admit that he and the upper management are the problem rather than the people actually making the games, a leaked workshop has added even more salt to the wound. The session showcased a 2024 early pre-alpha build of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, and what was shown has only deepened the sense of loss among fans mourning the project.
The workshop presentation first appeared on Reddit, but Ubisoft swiftly had it taken down via a DMCA claim. Not swiftly enough, however, as someone on Twitter compiled the images and screenshots from the game. While many find the visuals impressive, the full story behind the cancellation remains unclear. Poor project management seems a reasonable assumption, especially given the game’s troubled public history and the fact that the same leadership group oversaw a period in which Ubisoft lost 95% of its value over the past eight years.

After reports suggested the game was nearing release, Ubisoft officially announced the remake in September 2020 with an early 2021 target. Reception was lukewarm, with fans criticizing the weak graphics, but there was still hope that improvements would follow as long as the gameplay held up. A few months later, the release was pushed to March 2021, only for an indefinite delay to be announced before that date arrived. The launch was moved to 2022, and in May 2022 the project was transferred from Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Pune to Ubisoft Montreal. Nearly a year later, in May 2023, the game was officially rebooted and sent back to the concept phase.
After that, development updates became sparse and vague. Despite multiple teams working on the project, promising early visual redesign concepts, and even a January 2026 target window at one point, it ultimately still wasn’t enough for Ubisoft to move forward with releasing the game.
