Borderlands 4: Did the Nintendo Switch 2 Port Capitulate?

Although 2K (Take-Two) and Gearbox previously announced that Borderlands 4 would be released on the Japanese company’s console, it now looks increasingly unlikely.

 

Take-Two announced in its Q3 2026 earnings report that development of Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been put on hold. The Nintendo Switch 2 version was originally scheduled for release on October 3, shortly after the September 12 release of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC versions, but it was delayed at the last minute to an unannounced date. At the time, we didn’t know how serious the situation was.

“We made the difficult decision to pause development on that SKU. Our focus continues to be on delivering quality post-launch content and ongoing improvements to optimize the game for players. We’re continuing to collaborate closely with our friends at Nintendo. We have PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26 coming out for the Nintendo Switch 2, and we’re excited to bring more of our titles to the platform,” Take-Two spokesperson Alan Lewis told Variety.

Officially, it’s on hiatus, not canceled. Still, it feels like the port has been abandoned. If that’s the case, it’s reasonable to suspect Take-Two paused development of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 due to technical difficulties. Perhaps they couldn’t get the game running to an acceptable standard. We’ve also heard the new Nintendo hardware is closer to the Xbox Series S in terms of performance, and that only Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling can really help.

It would have been more straightforward for Take-Two to simply announce the port was canceled, and that they couldn’t make it work without major visual compromises or a lower frame rate. Alternatively, they could outsource the work and let another team attempt a proper port of Gearbox’s game. That way, Take-Two could still make money by reaching the Switch 2 audience, while giving a development team a chance to prove itself.
