Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, has categorically stated that this technology was not used in the game.
When asked by Gamesindustry whether Rockstar Games used artificial intelligence to create Grand Theft Auto VI, Zelnick answered no. Leonida State, a fictional version of Florida, was created entirely by hand. Zelnick mentioned that Take-Two studios use generative AI tools to increase cost and time efficiency.
“I’ve been enthusiastic about AI since the very beginning. Our products have always been built with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We’ve actually always been a leader in this area, and right now, we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including within our studios. We’re already seeing instances where generative AI tools are reducing costs and time. That said, do I think tools alone create great entertainment properties? No. There’s no evidence that that’s the case, nor will it be in the future. Specifically regarding Grand Theft Auto VI, generative AI plays no role in what Rockstar Games is developing. Their worlds are handcrafted. That’s what differentiates them. They’re built from the ground up: building by building, street by street, and neighborhood by neighborhood. They’re not procedurally generated; they shouldn’t be. That’s what makes great entertainment,” Zelnick said.
This is not the first time that Take-Two‘s CEO has discussed the impact of generative AI on the gaming industry. Although he believes that AI alone cannot create meaningful, interactive worlds, he recently stated that AI-based characters could be trained using human scripts to engage in more natural conversations than usual scripted dialogue. “Historically, we had to script every action a character engaged in. Because it’s interactive, just think about how much scripting that requires. Now, we’re always going to need great writers, and there will always be plenty of scripting, but characters should be able to interact in a way that feels more natural after being trained on the scripting created by great writers,” Zelnick added.
As for Grand Theft Auto VI, Take-Two‘s CEO has confirmed that the marketing campaign will begin in earnest this summer, ahead of the game’s planned release on November 19. We’ve already written about this.
