Todd Howard: There Will Be No Starfield 2.0, Almost Everyone Works on The Elder Scrolls VI! [VIDEO]

It’s a new interview, but not in one case the same statement the head of Bethesda Game Studios made that we heard about two years ago.

In an hour-long interview with Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) head Todd Howard discussed Bethesda’s biggest franchises, including Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. Although Howard didn’t share many details about upcoming projects – he refused to reveal anything more than that the team is working on several Fallout projects – we got some insight into his approach to game presentations and how the studio works. We also got a taste of what’s to come, with more Starfield news coming soon. Howard added that there will be no Starfield 2.0. Regarding The Elder Scrolls VI, Howard admitted that he wasn’t the one who announced the game so early. He added that development is going well and that they are happy with it. However, it will take a while longer. They are happy with the level of technology they have reached and how the game is shaping up.

They can already play it and will soon reach a major internal milestone. Most of BGS and some of their partners are focused on the game. Howard said he spends most of his time on The Elder Scrolls VI. He emphasized that he isn’t interested in the interim period between the game’s announcement and release. He will be much more excited to talk about things when the game is finished and the release date is closer.

Howard acknowledged that the company has evolved with each game it has made and that Starfield and Fallout 76 represent a creative departure from Bethesda’s typical games. However, he added that with The Elder Scrolls VI, they are returning to the classic style they know and love. The game will feature an updated engine, Creation Engine 3 – a v2 which is powered by Starfield. Howard added that BGS has a style that it likes to create, that its fans love, and that people expect from them. In another part of the interview, Howard made it clear that the studio is working on a lot of Starfield content and that BGS will soon discuss what it is working on.

“We’re moving into a phase where we’re ready to talk about Starfield and show people what’s coming to the game. We’ve been doing a lot of work that we really like. It is not Starfield 2.0. I’ve seen some of it, so, for setting expectations, I think it’s the kind of thing where, if you love Starfield, you’re going to love this. There will be updates and changes to the game that are not isolated, but rather meta, using outer space and other elements in ways that we haven’t before. However, if Starfield didn’t immediately connect with you, or if you lost interest or found it boring, I don’t think this will fundamentally change that,” Howard said.

He added that he doesn’t see the studio’s work on Starfield ending after the game’s next major update, which will likely reveal that Starfield is coming to the PlayStation 5. Rumor has it that the game will be released in April. Still, it’s unfortunate that we’re still hearing the same things from Howard that we have for months or even years.
