Bungie is taking a particularly strict approach with the Marathon reboot, so there won’t be any loopholes — which is completely understandable.
The team is doing a lot of marketing as the release of Bungie’s upcoming first-person PvPvE extraction shooter, Marathon, approaches in a week. A new blog post discussing the game’s network and security has appeared on Bungie’s official website. The post highlights the game’s dedicated server network and explains how elements such as Fog of War limit the usability of wallhacks. It also describes what happens if someone loses connection to the game. One of the most important points, however, is that anyone caught cheating in Marathon will be permanently banned from the game.
“Anyone found to be cheating will be permanently banned from playing Marathon, no second chances. We are taking a strong stance against cheating. Anyone found to be cheating or developing cheats will be permanently banned from playing Marathon. That said, no system is perfect, so we will have an appeals system in place to address any detection issues,” wrote Bungie.
If you are wrongfully banned, you will have the opportunity to regain access to Marathon. It seems that Bungie is doing everything it can to crack down on cheaters in its upcoming shooter game. This is understandable when you consider the damaging effect cheaters can have on the multiplayer community. If enough cheaters start showing up in lobbies, it will become impossible for players who don’t want to cheat to enjoy the game. Players don’t even have to encounter cheaters in every match. Sometimes, it’s enough to encounter cheaters in a single game. Players will see enough evidence that cheaters are ruining their gaming experience.
Marathon is set to release on March 5, 2026, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC at a price of $40. You can try it out this weekend, starting February 26, during the open test to evaluate server load.
