We Know When Kingdom Hearts Will Return, and It Will Be Soon, but One Major Question Remains

Disney has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts will receive special attention during this summer’s D23 event, guaranteeing new activity around the franchise in August. What the company has not revealed is whether the presentation will finally offer another look at the long-awaited Kingdom Hearts IV.

Fans have been waiting an exceptionally long time for another full-scale numbered entry in the Kingdom Hearts series. Leaving aside remasters, collections, and cloud editions, the franchise’s last major release was Kingdom Hearts III in 2019. Seven years later, with Kingdom Hearts IV now in development, Disney has officially placed the Square Enix franchise on the schedule for D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Disney has already unveiled the complete program for the three-day celebration, which will bring together previews, performances, and discussions devoted to many of the company’s largest properties. Planned attractions include an early look at the third season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a concert featuring composer Alan Menken, and several appearances by figures recognized as Disney Legends. Nothing has been announced on this front, but the event could also provide an opportunity to reveal something new about Avengers: Doomsday, the next major theatrical chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For video game fans, however, the confirmed presence of Kingdom Hearts is the most intriguing part of the schedule. Disney has promised that the franchise will be represented at D23 but has offered no explanation of what visitors should expect from that appearance. The announcement therefore leaves several possibilities open, ranging from an anniversary-focused presentation to a new showcase for Kingdom Hearts IV. Since the sequel recently resurfaced during a Nintendo Direct, many players are already hoping that another trailer or gameplay demonstration is being prepared.

D23 will take place in Anaheim, California, from August 14 through August 16. More information may emerge as the event approaches, but for now there is no indication whether Disney intends to celebrate the history of the franchise or join Square Enix in sharing substantial news about one of its most anticipated upcoming games.

Kingdom Hearts IV Will Not Leave Any Current Platform Behind

Anticipation has grown considerably since Kingdom Hearts IV returned during the latest Nintendo Direct, ending a 1,521-day absence following its original announcement. The presentation demonstrated that development is continuing and also clarified one of the release plan’s most important details: the game will launch simultaneously across every major current-generation platform, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. With the project finally back in public view, many fans now regard D23 as the ideal venue for Disney and Square Enix to show the sequel in action once again.
