Sony expects PlayStation 4 sales to reach 10 million in the current fiscal year, which ends in April 2015. So far the console has sold 7 million units worldwide, and by this time next year, Sony expects sales to be at 17 million.
Sony’s Kaz Hirai recently spoke to investors, where he revealed not only that the PlayStation 4 is already a profitable business, but that the company expects to sell 17 million PS3 and PS4 consoles this fiscal year. Of those 17 million, Sony is betting that 10 million will be PlayStation 4s.
Recently, Sony revealed that they sold 7 million PS4 consoles to date, and that over half of the console owners — 3.5 million — are PS Plus subscribers as well. This means that Sony has generated almost $90 million in revenue from PS Plus in the first six months.
It took Sony 3 years before they made money on each PS3 console sold. It took only 6 months to reach that stage with the PlayStation 4.
For a company that isn’t doing well financially, the PlayStation 4 is the one bright spot for Sony. It remains to be seen if the console business can lift the company out of its current slump.
