June’s sales results have arrived for the American gaming industry, and PlayStation 4 is once more the best-selling console in the country.
PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console of the month for the sixth month in a row now. Moreover, the PlayStation brand was winning, according to NPD, when you combine PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 (when compared to Xbox One and Xbox 360). Microsoft proclaimed its sales results yesterday, adding that Xbox One sales have doubled month-over-month. However, it wasn’t enough for Xbox One to surpass the PlayStation 4 in monthly sales.
In the so-called “next generation games sales,” PlayStation 4 games outsold Xbox One games for the month. Across all games in the top ten that are available on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the PS4 iteration sold better. Interestingly, in all games that are available on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the Xbox 360 games sold better.
Here’s the list of the top 10 best-selling games in the US according to NPD. As always, the consoles listed in parenthesis next to each game are in order of how well they sold across each platform, from best to worst:
1.) Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PC)
2.) Mario Kart 8 (NWU)
3.) Minecraft (360, PS3)
4.) EA Sports UFC (PS4, XBO)
5.) FIFA 14 (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PSV)
6.) NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, XBO, PC)
7.) Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC)
8.) Call of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, NWU, PC)
9.) Tomodachi Life (3DS)
10.) Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
The industry overall, when you take into account hardware, software, and accessories, grew 24 percent year-over-year. Hardware sales were up a full 100 percent year-over-year, while accessories grew a single percent. “Nine out of the last ten months saw year-over-year growth in new physical video game sales,” NPD notes.
Interestingly, “Combined sales of Xbox One and PS4 are over 80 percent higher than the combined totals for Xbox 360 and PS3 — an indication of the strength of the start of this new console generation.”
