Some years ago, Sony experienced a serious hacking of its systems where millions of PlayStation Network users were affected. Now the same thing is happening to Sony Pictures Studios, where hackers could infiltrate its databases and stolen many personal information of thousands of people, even including executives and famous actors like Sylvester Stallone.
A malware called Destover was used against Sony Pictures that can allow attackers to look through sensitive data and disable hard drives completely.
This hacker group calls themselves “Guardians of Peace” and they have already leaked a list of company passwords, employee salaries and social security numbers. The database includes current and former employees, including some famous people who have worked for the company, such as Sylvester Stallone and Judd Apatow.
Altogether, the hackers have stolen the personal information of 47,000 current and former Sony employees. Not only that, but they also leaked several Sony movies, such as “Fury” starring Brad Pitt and the upcoming musical “Annie”. Los Angeles Times estimates that this cyber-attack could cost Sony “tens of millions of dollars”.
Sony has been in this deep shit before with the hacking of the PlayStation Network, and it took them precious time to gain the trust of people again. The attack on PSN in 2011 is estimated to have cost the company over $170 million.
This new cyber-attack arrives at a very bad time for the company, since Sony is trying to restructure its business, putting more focus on the PlayStation 4 and the gaming division.
