PREVIEW – This year Larian Studios will finally release Divinity Origin Sin for the PlayStation 4. This beloved RPG was already released a year ago, but the PS4 port will be available by the end of the year according to Swen Vincke manager of Larian Studios.
Game drought or calm before the storm? Whichever it is, a small news is news, so we are happy to announce that this year fans of RPG will get to experience Divinity: Original Sin. As the game has already been scored/reviewed/dissected by critics and gamers alike, Larian is only planning a simple port.
This means there’s no big reveal, marketing campaign or hype machine, it has simply been announced that a PS4 port is in the works. The only difference is the publisher, as Larian has passed the chance to Focus Home Interactive.
The publisher is most notable for releasing such games as: Bound by Flame, The Walking Dead Episode One and Two, or my colleague Anikó’s favorite game, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments.
In a web of Skills
There is no need to detail the story of the game for those that are invested in the lore of the Divinity series, so those can just skip ahead.
Gamers however who are new to this series, and would love to pick up the threads of this colorful world, here’s a bit of information about the story: You are a member of a Sorcerers order that is tasked with eliminating dangerous mages and other magic users in the world of Divinity. Let’s just keep that way and not reveal anything more about the story.
Once the opening cinematic is done, we get to create our…. not one, but two characters! We can select their skin tone, hair color, voice, and height/weight.
We can then select a class that ranges from fighters to witches, so there’s a lot of classes to choose from. Those that love RPGs will have a lot of fun (and time) tinkering with the settings until they can create the best combination to their liking.
Fight, talk and go on an adventure!
Once we are done with the character creation we can press accept, to finally begin our adventure in the world of Divinity. After the initial cutscene that looks like a comic book page, we can finally take over the controls.
The endless chests, the walls of text when talking to NPCS, and the combat. Which to be honest does not look that good, it’s a turn based combat system where the theory of the bigger fish eats the smaller fish is at works. The one that is powerful will win, and there is no need for reflex, defense, counterattack or dodging. A real time combat system would have benefited this game.
Would you like to know more?
As I said the graphics do not really test the limits of the console, as it is not the creams of creams. The music only adds more monotony to the entire gameplay, and there is no variety, just the constant feeling of epicness blaring from the speakers.
The entire sound design team must have been on vacation, and just the technician remained who lost his hearing in the 90s. The conversations are on the same quality, and are really dreadful at times.
In the end
I would like to clarify that I do not wish to offend anyone, but I am a hardcore sandbox fan, and get really annoyed by such quality RPG titles. I do not understand why there is a need to port PC specific genres to a console without compromising a few parts such as UI, or the inventory system. Unfortunately this game might not be for everyone
