We’re not denying that Sony’s PlayStation 4 is the current console generation’s leading figure with its 25+ million sold consoles, but we can’t also ignore the fact that this console will never top the results of the PlayStation 2, and there’s several reasons for that.
The PlayStation 2 had over 155 million sales (no typo there!). The current consoles seem to have shorter lifespans, so the PS4 will have to get around 130 million sales in just 3-4 years, which is seemingly out of reach at the moment to achieve. You also have to add the fact that the smartphones/tablets also have a big role in gaming, which wasn’t the case two generations before. On top of that, the Xbox One does have a legit chance to win here and there (Rise of the Tomb Raider might help, at least until the release of the PC port), plus the Nintendo NX is likely to be released by the end of 2016, making the situation a bit more difficult.
Another reason why the PS4 will not reach the top spot is that the PlayStation 2 was out at the right place, in the right time, with a right price – it was also helped by the fact that it was also usable as a DVD-player, while nowadays, most of the things we watch is via the internet. Unless the PlayStation 4 picks up big time in the Chinese market, it will probably just beat the PlayStation 3’s results… but that’s also a decent thing anyway.
