There is still a demand for physical copies of videogames, because collectors can proudly put the cases on the shelves, possibly even skipping the internet connection requirement, rendering some of them useful when there is no net nearby. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (which takes a friendly amount of space on the PlayStation 4 digitally: just barely 27 gigabytes) got a physical PC version, but it actually threw the notion of the physical games into the trash bin with a single move.
So you have the case and the disc in it – you might logically think that you can immediately go and install from the disc, right? Wrong. The disc has a single eight megabyte installer on it for Steam. Therefore, it makes the phyiscal copy of the game useless, as you still have to download the game from Steam. But think of it: some places might not have lightning fast internet speeds, and that is why there is a demand for Blu-ray/DVD copies of games. Sure, this move can cut the piracy out, but in the process, the physical purchase is rendered useless.
We think that it is going to be a more often seen solution for PC ports, which is likely to end up being entirely digital. Congratulations Konami, you wasted material on Big Boss with this move. „Smooth move.”
