Square Enix pulled off a surprise announcement with them saying that there is a NieR sequel in development at PlatinumGames, exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Now it has its name finalized as well, because it’s called NieR: Automata. The director will be Taro Yoko, who was also responsible for the first title, as well as its predecessors in Drakengard. This means that we can expect a nice continuation from the first game in many ways.
NieR: Automata will see androids fighting, but the genderless (this applies to the protagonist – despite looking female, it is not a female robot actually) and emotionless beings will still have unique quirks and personalities. The Earth was attacked by aliens, and the mankind wants to take the planet back from the Moon, where they had to flee during the invasion, and the aforementioned android warriors will help their case.
Interesting concept. The game will launch somewhere in 2016. The trailer does have a hint of the original NieR‘s style (we wouldn’t be surprised, if that gets a PS4 port!), as well as PlatinumGames‘ distinct approach to the games. This might actually be a very successful combinaton.
