The 3.50 PlayStation 4 firmware update brought several improvements to the console. For example, it now allows us to use Remote Play on our PCs/Macs, although it does need some things to be fixed. There’s one more thing that we didn’t mention either.
The 3.50 upgrade silently added support for 4 terabyte hard drives! That’s eight times more space than what the PS4 has in default with its 500 GB HDD. In case you want to install multiple AAA games – Destiny, Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection, Batman Arkham Knight… you’re already over 100 gigs! – then you can replace the factory drive with your HDD.
There’s a slight problem, though. There are no 9.5mm thick 4TB hard drives out there; only 15mm ones are available in 2.5″ size (the one you use for laptops). This difference immediately makes that new HDD impossible to put into your console by default. You can use 3.5″ drives for external storage, however.
It seems even Sony thought that they were way early to the party with this addition as they didn’t mention it at all. It can come in handy later, though.
