AMD is playing an essential role for console manufacturing as both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One uses their graphical chips and CPUs. (Wii U also uses AMD technology.) Where to go from here? When will the new consoles come? Will there be anything new shortly? AMD has already teased them…
According to GameSpot, AMD‘s CEO, Lisa Su referenced that the company had „three design wins” at their latest earnings briefing. These wins can get about 1.5 billion dollars in the next few years. Years – not all designs can launch during 2016. We already knew that the Nintendo NX is way under development, Sony’s PS4K is rumored multiple times a month, and Microsoft also likely developing a new Xbox somewhere in Redmond. As Su wrote: „In addition [to the new design wins] we have our current game console business as well. So when you look at the aggregate of that, we do expect to start ramping that new business in the second half of the year. But we also expect the seasonal uplift of our traditional game console business.” New business in the second half of the year?! This is a potential reference to the new consoles. Su did not confirm anything, though.
If this information is related to the new consoles, AMD might see their new Polaris technology being used by console makers…
