MOVIE NEWS – It’s tour Ryan Reynolds tour (the actor who played Deadpool) to come to the rescue Ryan Reynolds and to give $5K to a movie theater who infringed a Utah state liquor law by screening Deadpool while serving beer to the auditorium.
The actor performed indeed a very heroic accomplishment, donating $5,000 to the legal defense fund started by a Salt Lake City theater and pub that screened the Marvel superhero adventure against the laws of the state.
Deadpool, as Superhero movies fans know by know, is a pretty much R-rated movie that includes explicit language and also graphic sexual situations along with plenty of gore and violence. Showing the offensive content directly infringes Utah liquor laws that forbid the serving of any alcoholic beverage during a movie that includes simulated sex scenes.
Three undercover agents who were the theater during a showing of Deadpool later filed the complaint against the Brewvies Cinema Pub, citing the establishment for breaking the law in late February.
Brewvies set up a GoFundMe account to help crowdsource money for their legal misfortunes. They offer some background on their theater before asking movie fans to help donate to the cause. The theater pub was founded in 1997, and claims to have provided a ‘fun, unique atmosphere for adults 21 and over to enjoy great films, food and drink’ since they opened to the public nearly twenty years ago. This is what they had to say about the Deadpool incident.
“Brewvies has never had a liquor violation and has never shown pornographic films. For years, Brewvies has dealt with the oppressive Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The DABC has menaced to fine us or suspends or revoke our liquor license, just for showing R-rated films like Deadpool, Hangover 2, Magic Mike XXL and Ted 2. We are fighting for the State of Utah to respect our First Amendment freedom of speech. The money that we are raising will go towards a legal defense fund to be used for legal fees seeking an injunction against the enforcement of a statute that violates our freedom of speech. If there are any funds left over from our legal battle, we will use the funds for a public celebration of our freedom of speech! This is a fight that is important to all individuals 21 and over who cherish their freedom of speech. We are ready to fight back. We are grateful for any support you can provide.”
Along with donating the $5K, Ryan Reynolds has shown his support on Twitter, cracking jokes at the expense of Utah and their state laws. The Associated Press reports that the state agency has agreed to schedule a meeting in May to discuss and/or settle the complaint without further disciplinary action.
Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life. It is the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. And it is Rated R for strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity.
