UPDATE: In case you hoped that your save file on the PS3, or X360 can be transferred over to the Special Edition, prepare to be disappointed – you can’t do this!
Pete Hines has revealed that by changing console generations, we will be forced to restart the game from scratch, so you can’t continue your adventures on the PS4 where you stopped on PS3. There will also be no cross-platform between PC and X1 either.
At least PC owners, who have Skyrim and all three DLCs, will get the Special Edition for free on October 28 when this version is released.
ORIGINAL: Bethesda explains why The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s Special Edition re-release will be available for free for some people.
The current-gen re-release of Skyrim was part of Bethesda‘s E3 conference, confirming rumors about this game. Originally, this game launched at the end of 2011. The PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions will be full price, so 60 bucks/euros for console owners. However, PC players might end up getting the game for free!
If you have the base game and the three DLCs (Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn) on PC, don’t worry: Bethesda will make you the Special Edition available for free on Steam. Pete Hines, game marketing and PR manager at Bethesda, explained their reasons. As Skyrim wasn’t out on PS4 or X1 yet, this is why the game will be full price, and as the mods and higher-resolution textures were already on Steam Workshop, it would have been an unfair move on Bethesda‘s end to make PC users pay for the game again.
Skyrim: Special Edition is out on October 28.
