MOVIE NEWS – Just a few more days to wait until December 21 for Assassin’s Creed to hit theaters, still, the stars gathered for the world premiere in New York City earlier this week. Some of the die-hard fans of the original video game series were here, and while we’ll have to wait still for the full movie reviews to come out (we’ll cover it December 20, next Tuesday), it seems these fans were quite happy with the movie. We have quite some early social media reactions from the New York premiere that happened on Wednesday.

These reactions came from some different Twitter users offering plenty of praise for this video game adaptation. Many singled out the iconic “leap of faith” as a high point for the movie, which was an iconic part of the original game. We reported back in August that this jump, presented by stuntman Damien Walters, broke a world record for the highest free fall jump at 125 feet, the highest in 35 years. Some Twitter users also revealed that Damien Walters was actually on hand for the premiere, where he performed a 90-foot free fall jump into a large mat for the fans gathered at the premiere.

Although most of these fans didn’t give too many details, one Twitter user dubbed “Tasukigirl Cosplay” claimed that the movie, “gets so many things right,” while adding that she has to watch it again soon. While this is still a small sampling of the original game’s fan base, it seems safe to presume that most fans of the video game series will like this movie. Now, the real question is, will those who are just fans historical/sci-fi adventure movies, Michael Fassbender or Marion Cotillard, will they like Assassin’s Creed. We aren’t sure yet until next week, but it already has a chance to break a 15-year-old box office record.

Earlier this year, the rather dire Warcraft movie became the highest-grossing video game movie at the worldwide box office with $433.5 million. Nevertheless, since it flopped at the domestic box office with just $47.2 million, 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider still holds the domestic box office record for video game adaptations, with $131.2 million, with this year’s The Angry Birds Movie the only other video game movie to crack $100 million domestically, with $107.5 million. Assassin’s Creed could very well break this 15-year record, but Ubisoft’s European chief Alain Corre revealed earlier this year that the movie doesn’t necessarily need to be a box office hit, with the movie’s purpose only to introduce the property to more people.

Justin Kurzel, who directed both Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in Hamlet, directs from a script by Scott Frank, Bill Collage, Adam Cooper and Michael Leslie.
