Although Sony still hasn’t announced anything official regarding the new firmware yet, there are already tidbits known about it.
Eurogamer managed to get a copy of the patch notes, and they revealed what the next big system software update would bring. One of the improvements will be useful for PlayStation 4 Pro owners: they will be able to stream at 1080/60 to Twitch. Slim and regular PS4 owners will not get the feature, sadly.
The new firmware will also allow you to follow any account (which isn’t possible at the moment), as Sony thinks it will „encourage more sharing of content and more interactions.” You can also set up if you want to be followed by anyone or just your friends, and blocking will also be an option.
Parental guidance will also be getting a significant improvement. Quoting Eurogamer, „new family accounts will be able to feature multiple adult accounts in a family, able to act in a parent/guardian role and set parental controls on a per-account basis, so each child has different communications, content-viewing and spending limit privileges. Requests can also be sent to adult accounts on other PS4s to join the same family.” You can also work on these functions with a web application as well.
After installing the new firmware, you can see the system notifications, uploads, and downloads from your Quick Menu without the need to quit to Home. Push notifications for events, spectator comments on the screen while broadcasting in VR mode, linking broadcasts to PlayStation communities, and support for seven more languages (including Hungarian) will also come with 5.00.
One more thing, quoting Eurogamer again: „Sony will add support for bundle and compilation discs, with or without add-ons, and discs which support games and add-ons (such as in a Game of the Year Edition) which don’t need developers to rework any code.”
The firmware has no release date yet. It’s not as significant as say, 4.50 was, but it’s still a step forward regardless.
