As both consoles use AMD technology, Dr. Lisa T. Su knows the best what the demand for their hardware is…
AMD‘s CEO talked about the demands in the latest financial earnings call. A quote follows: „Our semi-custom business continues to perform as expected for the year and we anticipate seasonal demand to remain healthy as our customers enter the holiday sales cycle with Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro and Microsoft’s Xbox One X.” What she means is that the sales are good, but there will be a spike for more AMD APUs for the November/December consoles.
„We believe that semi-custom revenue will be down a little bit on a year-over-year basis, and that’s expected. We’re in the fifth year of the [console generation] cycle, and you would expect that units to be down, although we have some positive mix because of the new launch of the Microsoft Xbox One X console, which is a higher ASP product for us,” she added.
AMD’s optimistic mentality is understandable, but we’ll have to wait a bit to see how well the Xbox One X will sell (it launches on November 7), and how the PlayStation 4 Pro will be capable of keeping up with it…
