So far, we guessed that Yakuza Kiwami 2‘s localization would be announced at PlayStation Experience – we were wrong!
Sam Mullen, SEGA‘s localization producer, confirmed during a stream that while Yakuza 6: The Song of Life will be playable at Sony’s event, there will be no announcements, which have been a tradition in the past three years. 2014 had 5’s, 2015 had 0’s, and 2016 got 6’s localization announced here. Mullen added that 2018 would be a great year for Yakuza, and there’s also a super secret project in development.
Scott Strichart added that he’s still working on the Yakuza series, and the pair even mentioned the Japan-exclusive Yakuza Ishin (which is set in the middle of the 19th century, at the Meiji restoration) – even it might be localized for the Western audience. The quick announcements (at one point, three games – 0, Kiwami, and 6 – were confirmed but none of them were available) caused nightmares for the marketing staff, and it’s the reason why SEGA solely concentrates on Yakuza 6.
SEGA might be announcing next year that Yakuza Kiwami 2 (which is out next week in Japan), as well as Hokuto ga Gotoku (Fist of the North Star spinoff), might be available in English as early as 2018. We’ll see!
