Rick Dickinson, Designer of the Popular Sinclair ZX Spectrum Died

He was one of the pioneers in popularizing the 8-bit video game in Europe during the 80s.

Rick Dickinson, the designer of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer, died on Tuesday, April 24, suffering from cancer, according to his wife, Lizzy Dickinson. Rick “the Viking” Dickinson signed numerous designed ZX Spectrum series, one of the most popular devices to play in the 80’s in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe.

Dickinson joined Sinclair Research in 1979, after graduating from Newcastle. He designed the ZX80 and ZX81 microcomputers, with his tactile keyboard, as well as the TV80 and Sinclair QL casings. Earlier this month, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum was celebrating its 35th anniversary with a campaign on Kickstarter to fund the Spectrum Next, an improved version adapted to the modern times of the popular microcomputer.
