If the PlayStation VR gets a new model in a year or two, it might come with a new HMD (head-mounted display).
Japan Display Inc. (we will shorten it to JDI) was formed via consolidation of the display businesses of Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi. It manufactures small/middle-sized LTPS LCD panels. This week, the company announced that they are working on a 3.25″ LTPS TFT-LCD panel, specifically made for VR applications. (That’s smaller than the current PlayStation VR display size – 5,7″, but it could be used as one display per eye.) It’d have 1001 pixels per inch (1001 PPI), and 2160xRGBx2432 resolution. It’d also come with a high refresh rate (120 Hz), and a decent response time (2.2 msec). There’s another version, too – 803 PPI, 1920xRGBx2160 resolution, 90 Hz refresh rate (similar to the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift). If we put together two of the same displays, we’d get a 4K resolution!
JDI expects to start the commercial shipments by the end of March, and it’s likely that Sony will purchase some of them. After all, the current PlayStation VR‘s HMD is only 386 PPI, which, in comparison to the new JDI display, is outdated (look at the comparison below). The 2019 plan doesn’t look too shabby either, as the PlayStation 5 could arrive around 2020.
Will there be a new PlayStation VR along the PlayStation 5? It’s possible, isn’t it?
