It was already rumoured that Epic Games‘ money-printing game would show up on the Nintendo Switch. Now, it was officially confirmed.
Fortnite‘s Switch port was announced during Nintendo‘s E3 Direct. In fact, the free-to-play battle royale is already available on the big N’s portable platform, and it supports cross-play with the Xbox One, PC, iOS, and Android versions. As usual, the PlayStation 4 is out of sight, but the issue here is bigger than it usually is! First, let’s look at the announcement trailer:
If you used your account on PlayStation 4, then tried logging in on the Switch, you’ll get an error message that you can read below. You can’t use your old account on the Nintendo console if you previously used it on Sony’s console. Sony says that there’s no way to unlink your account, which means you’d have to create a new one to play on the Switch, which means you’d lose your progress, bought DLC, and so on…
The Switch port is incomplete, mind you: despite Battle Royale having over 125 million players, the Save the World mode is simply NOT going to show up on the N platform. The base-building, cooperative fortifying mode against husks is going to remain on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, and there are no plans to make it available on the Switch…
After datamining the game’s files, Fortnite Battle Royale Leaks revealed on Twitter that shortly, we’d get the option to gift items to our friends in the game, although it seems to require some currency (possibly V-Bucks?) to do so.
Yesterday, the first Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am was held, which became one of the most viewed streamed events on Twitch. Fortnite‘s Twitch account had 700k+, Ninja’s Twitch had 667k+ viewers, making a total of at least 1.3 million viewers on the website, and it was boosted further by YouTube (100k+), Mixer (25k+), and Facebook (15k+). The first official competitive Fortnite championship was won by Ninja and Marshmello, who donated the one million dollar prize to charity.
Epic announced Fortnite 2019 World Cup, which will have a 100 million dollar prize pool. 125 million players can qualify for the event throughout the world via several qualification events (and squads won’t be banned), but on the official World Cup, solo and duos will only be allowed. Paying yourself into the event will be impossible, and if you played alone until now but had good results, you will also have the chance to qualify, Epic says.
Fortnite is successful, and with the Switch, its star might rise even higher than before.
