[E3 2018] New Details About Cyberpunk 2077

After the trailer, the Polish developers started to talk a lot about the game.

We could describe CD Projekt RED‘s hopeful title in short by saying that it’s going to be a first-person perspective action-RPG with, similarly to The Witcher 3, is going to be user-friendly and anti-monetization. However, there’s a lot more to discuss…

„In 2077, America is in pieces. Megacorps control life in all its aspects from the top floors of their sky-high fortresses. Down below, drug-pushing gangs, dirty-tech hustlers, and slingers of illicit braindances run the streets. […] In a world where you have no future, what matters is that you control who you are. To survive and protect your independence, you modify your body with advanced cyberware and take jobs others would never dare. […] The only rules you obey are your own. Because you’re a Cyberpunk,” the press release says. Our character is going to be called V (where have we heard this name before…?), who can be customized heavily, the class system will be fluid (the press release names three classes: netrunner, techie, and solo, and we could be all three – we’ll get back to it, as well as the customization, later), and the game will offer an interactive dialogue control. We could compliment an antagonistic character’s tattoo to lighten them up, or end the conversation with a bullet. Genre-wise, CD Projekt RED wants to go for „game noir”, implementing the film noir elements in the open world. The city, called Night City, will be split into six districts, and all of them will have tons of terminals to connect online (the game is called CYBERPUNK 2077 for a reason). The main plot will offer dozens of hours of gameplay, and there will also be sidequests and Street Stories, too, to be appealing to both completionists and those who want instant action.

Although the game will be first-person, using a vehicle will change the angle to the third person. Kyle Rowley, the game’s associate design director, told GameSpot that there will be both ranged and melee combat, and the latter was primarily helped by The Witcher 3, as they learned a lot during its development. He added that the fight would be – obviously – different here due to the first-person perspective, Geralt helped them.

Rowley pointed out that there will be three categories for the weapons: power, tech, and smart. He described Power weapons as „traditional weapons that you would have nowadays. When you fire them, we may have, for example, exaggerated hit reactions and staggers to kind of emphasise the hit impacts.” Tech focuses on penetrating through walls, NPCs, and other objects, and Smart is capable of following, tracking our enemies. Rowley explained that this category was designed to be accessible for the players. He pointed out that Cyberpunk 2077 is not a shooter. It’s an action-RPG with shooter elements and deep progression systems that we’d expect from a CD Projekt RED title.

Regarding V, Rowley told the following to GameSpot: „She takes on takes on dangerous jobs–he or she, actually–she takes on dangerous jobs that no one else will… We have a full character creation system in the game, so you’ll be able to define your gender, whether it’s male or female. You’ll be able to define how you look; you’ll have different body types, hairstyles, clothes, tattoos, make-up, and many, many more. And obviously you can define your, what we’re calling ‘Life Path.’ It’s like a backstory, and the things you define in your life path, in your backstory, can modify or unlock things as you’re playing through the game.

At the start of the game, we don’t have any classes that you pick from. In Cyberpunk 2020 there are lots of different roles you can take on: corporate, rocker boy, netrunner, techie, etc. At the start of the game, you’re not picking any of those classes. As you’re progressing through the game, you’re modifying and adjusting your class based on the attributes that you pick and decide to install. So it’s a very fluid system, we don’t lock you in at the start of the game.”

Regarding the environment, he added the following: „We tried to build the cyberpunk atmosphere in daytime, because we know for a fact that we can create the moody, atmospheric noir feeling that you get from Blade Runner, so for the trailer we really wanted to show how you could take the cyberpunk elements of this dystopian world and show it when the sun’s out. It’s not something you necessarily experience in traditional cyberpunk media, but that’s not to say we don’t have those Blade Runner noir elements.

The story is very noir in how it works, the feeling, the missions and the different characters you interact with. It has that noir vibe, so if anybody’s worried that we’re not going to have that Blade Runner noir feeling, it’s going to be there. The game has a full day-night cycle with weather systems so you’ll experience both daytime and nighttime. And, for sure, it’s going to have that neon cityscape that people are craving for.”

Cyberpunk 2077 has no release date yet. It is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. However, we previously wrote about how it could also be a next-gen title as well…
