Ubisoft’s Jonathan Dumont, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s creative director, answered questions on Twitter and Reddit, revealing a ton of new information.
As there’s a lot of tweets involved, we won’t link them one by one, but go into the new details they revealed. We learned that there would be a full-fledged quest log system, and specific systems will also have their own progress tracking (for example, for hidden items, probably). Every physical copy of the game, regardless of the version and platform, will have reversible covers, featuring Alexios or Kassandra, the male and female heroes, respectively. A fully-dynamic weather system will be included, and Dumont says that sailing in the storm will be challenging.
There will be a related novel to the game, featuring Kassandra, but whatever we do in the game will not be right or wrong, as we can decide our path. There will also be Pieces of Eden in the plot, including Leonidas’ spear. Odyssey will come with seven different biomes, and many of its subregions will feature a different look and feel. Parkour puzzles will make a return, and the dialogue system will impact the ending and the outcome of quests. (Oh, there will be romance, too – you can exit at any time, but there will be clothes on during the romance scenes. What is this, Mass Effect or Ride to Hell Retribution?) Your recruited NPCs can be used for distractions or to fight along with you, and when it comes to naval combat, you can upgrade your ship’s hull, weaponry, as well as your crew that could come with different perks.
There are more new details from Reddit: We can pet and tame many different animals, but there will be no cats. However, there will be a horse that we could ride, called Phobos. The modern-day story will be obligatory, and depending on our choices, we might get more of it than other players. Odyssey will have more content than Assassin’s Creed Origins, as well as a bigger map, although half of it will be the sea.
In most cases, the gear will not be randomly placed, and they will follow objectives that we can set. If we complete a gear set, we will get a set bonus (like more damage). Unlocking abilities that suit your playstyle will also be possible, so if you want to be a modest assassin, it can become true, which can’t be said about unlockable parachutes, as there won’t be any. Also, you can’t customise the look of your characters. Instead, mix and match equipment to achieve a different look, and there won’t be dyes – the hoot will automatically match the colour of the chest piece.
Dumont says that Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is an AC title because they are about experiencing a key moment in history – here, it’s going to be the Peloponnesian War, and characters such as Socrates and Hippocrates will also show up. Due to the reworked dialogue system, prepare to debate Socrates. Dumont also added that the naval combat would not be as essential as in IV: Black Flag. Instead, it will be arcadey and easy to access, and due to the different era, cleaving and ramming the other ship will be more important than in IV. Javelins and arrows will replace cannons.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will launch on October 5 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
