The PlayStation 4 is performing so well that Sony has increased its expectations.
Sony has released its financial report for the first quarter of the current fiscal year (April 1 – June 30), and in this period, 3.2 million consoles were shipped. If we add the previous number (79 million), we now know that the PlayStation 4 is currently at 82.2 million units! (There is no differentiation between the PlayStation 4 Slim and the PlayStation 4 Pro. Thus, we can’t provide numbers about them.)
Year-on-year, Sony had 124 billion more sales revenue (472.1 billion, a 36% increase), mostly due to the PlayStation Network sales. The operating income has also jumped massively from 17.7 to 83.5 billion yen due to the rise in sales. Until April 2019, they expect a 15% increase in sales revenue (2180 billion yen) and 60 billion yen more operating income (250 instead of 190) in the Game & Network Services branch, which is where the PlayStation brand is located within Sony.
We won’t go into details about Sony’s other branches’ results, but we can say that the Game & Network Services part of the company is bringing Sony forward on its own. Thus, we’re not surprised to see the PlayStation 4 getting an increase in shipment expectations: instead of 16 million, Sony now expects 17 million to be shipped in this fiscal year, which means 96 million PlayStation 4s is the target until the end of March.
The PlayStation 4, despite close to its sixth birthday, is still going strong. Keep it up…
