Square Enix will stop expanding Final Fantasy XV shortly.
Final Fantasy XV‘s The Dawn of the Future „season pass” was announced in April, containing Aranea’s, Lunafreya’s, and Noctis’ episodes – these three DLC got all cancelled. (One DLC, Ardyn’s episode, remains, though!) Square Enix has changed direction internally, which means Luminous Productions‘ formation (shortened to LP from now on) to work on AAA titles was done so by hiring the team behind the main game of Final Fantasy XV. LP’s focus will be on „large-scale, high-quality AAA game titles, which best leverages [LP’s] strengths.” This redirection made Square Enix lose 33 million dollars.
Thus (or maybe for a different reason?), Hajime Tabata, the director of Final Fantasy XV, as well as the studio head of Luminous Productions, announced that after October 31, he’s no longer with Square Enix and LP, to work on his next project in his company, and with his departure, he decided to „hand over the torch to the next generation group of talented and trustworthy colleagues.”
On November 29, it’ll be two years since the launch of Final Fantasy XV on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the publisher celebrates it with a brand new trailer – however, if you haven’t played the game yet and planned to do so, we don’t recommend watching the following video:
Final Fantasy XV will expand a bit, though – on December 12, at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET, a Final Fantasy XV x Final Fantasy XIV collaboration mission called Adventurer from Another World, will arrive in the form of a free update. In it, Y’jjimei, a young Miqo’te woman, hops over to FFXV’s world, allowing us to fight Garuda. Completing the mission will give us the following Glamour Prism costumes: Noctis – Miqo’te, Ignis – Elezen, Gladiolus – Roegadyn, Prompto – Hyur. The mission, which can be accepted in the Cauthless rest area in Duscae, will require to complete Beginning of The Hexatheon’s Blessings / Touch the First Runestone in the main game first.
At the same time, Final Fantasy XV Multiplayer: Comrades will receive a standalone version on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Thus, this version that would not require the base game, will not need the base game anymore, and it will also bring ten new bosses, costumes, and weapons. Those who have acquired Comrades via the expansion will get the standalone edition for free, as the standalone version will only have the Avatar Creation and the Photo Viewing functions remaining. (For PC users, Comrades was available from the get-go – they will get the new bosses, costumes, and weapons via a free update.) With Comrades going standalone, the season pass of Final Fantasy XV will have a new price (15 dollars/euros).
Previously, we mentioned that from The Dawn of the Future DLC, only Episode Ardyn would survive. Indeed – it is going to launch in March on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It will be set in Insomnia, thirty years before the events of the main game. Ardyn wants to take revenge on the royal family, while his „human capabilities” will also surface. He won’t be as emotionless as in the base game. The Final Fantasy XV Episode Ardyn – Prologue short film, which is likely arriving before the DLC does, will give a bit of background story on why he became revengeful.
So, Final Fantasy XV will technically die in March – it will not expand with episodes any more from that point…
