Psyonix, the developers behind Rocket League, is about to be acquired. However, we are not entirely sure if we can appreciate the team who is behind those money bags.
On Psyonix‘ website, we can read that the team is joining the Epic family. Yes, Epic Games, led by Tim Sweeney! The acquisition should be completed by late May, early June. The developers say that this move will allow them to „serve [its] community in even bigger and better ways,” and they have a highly positive outlook on the eSports as well. However, that is not all, as there is a sentence that says Rocket League will show up on the Epic Games Store.
Even though this sentence is not in the current announcement post, on The Verge, we can still find this little piece: „The PC version of Rocket League will come to the Epic Games store in late 2019. In the meantime, it will continue to be available for purchase on Steam; thereafter it will continue to be supported on Steam for all existing purchasers.” Now, Psyonix’ site only says this: „Rocket League is and remains available on Steam. Anyone who owns Rocket League through Steam can still play it and can look forward to continued support.” But the game is a best-seller on Steam…
That’s not how it is. If Epic Games is the owner, then – seeing Epic Games Store‘s expansion – the game will definitely hop off Steam by the end of the year, and – as GamesRadar points out – only those can play the vehicular football there who already bought a copy. It’s reasonable: if we bought a product, we should be able to access it…
So this could be Epic Games‘ new strategy: if there are successful titles created by smaller developer teams, they might just acquire the devs (pay them off?) to get under Epic’s banner, cutting them away from Steam. Oh, and if Psyonix will get a new game, that might not show up on Steam that easily either!
