As Sony is skipping this year’s E3 to effectively copy what Nintendo does with Nintendo Direct, they are focusing on a streaming series called the State of Play. But what could Square Enix be up to, though? They announced nearly four years ago that they are working on the Final Fantasy VII Remake! (They announced at the 2015 E3!)
Currently, all we know about State of Play (which will start today at 3 PM Pacific, 6 PM Eastern, or at midnight in Europe) that it will show more details about the Medievil remake, and there will also be an unannounced game for the masses. That’s not a lot, but we can add two tweets to this list. One of them is from Shinji Hashimoto, who (with some free translation) said that yes, he will be there, promoting the State of Play broadcast. Hashimoto is the brand manager of Final Fantasy, so something must be happening within Square Enix!
That’s not all: Final Fantasy’s official Twitter account has also started sharing suspicious images (as well as a chocobo-related poll…). Here’s an example from Final Fantasy VII, with, surprise, a chocobo on the photo.
If we had to guess, the situation is that Sony will finally show something new of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was switched to an episodic model by Square Enix, who also decided to work in-house on the game instead of collaborating with outsiders. It’s about time, as Tetsuya Nomura, who has recently released Kingdom Hearts III, can now concentrate more on Cloud’s remade adventures.
So, the State of Play is happening in just a few hours, and we’ll likely discuss some of it tomorrow. However, we wouldn’t like to guess what Sony is planning to reveal – it at least means that the Japanese company hasn’t given up on the PlayStation 4 developments just yet, which could pay off…
