The head of Inti Creates (Mega Man 9, Mega Man 10, Mighty Gunvolt, Mighty No. 9, Blaster Master Zero, etc…) says the next-gen PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Project Scarlett will not be successful that easily.
„So when these companies put out new consoles I think one of the most important things for them is going to be how many exclusives they can have at their launch, because if they don’t have those then the chance that they’re going to have a failed launch is going to be pretty high I think. The other thing that will determine the new consoles’ fate is the precedent that Nintendo Switch set. It does something new that no system can or has done. So whatever these new systems are, they’re going to need to offer an experience that you can only have by owning it. I think that, especially with the precedent that Nintendo Switch has set, that uniqueness is more important than ever now,” Takuya Aizu, the head of Inti Creates, told VGC.
Aizu thinks that Nintendo has covered off the portable market, which means if another company would compete against the big N, they would have a tough time. „I think the only console that needs that portability to succeed is a potential Switch successor,” Aizu added. He’s right: Nintendo with the 3DS (which can be called dead by this point, as the Nintendo Switch Lite will launch in September…) has knocked out Sony, who had reasonable success with the PSP while the big N had the DS. However, the PlayStation Vita (outside Japan, the local market) had no chance against the 3DS.
We agree with Aizu, but not only the exclusive games, but the features will also play a role in the launch of the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox. And there’s also the price that will play a decisive role.
