Although the PlayStation 5 ‘s release is more than a year away (perhaps Sony will officially name the next console in February, when – according to rumours – they will have the announcement event), we can already see how the console’s developer kit (we’ll shorten it to dev kit) might look like.
Let’s Go Digital, a Dutch website, published two pictures that they found on Brazil’s INPI‘s website. INPI (Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial) is Brazil’s national intellectual (industrial) property institute, but Sony has also filed the trademark at WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), too. The patents are for an „unknown electronic device,” but Yasuhiro Ootori, who also worked on the PlayStation 4’s design, had designed something unusual this time (his name is listed as the designer).
This is an unusual design, even from Sony, who made the PlayStation 4’s, as well as its two updated version’s (PlayStation 4 Slim, PlayStation 4 Pro) design „slanted.” It’s possible that we see a devkit here, as there are several ports in the front of the device (which is always good to have – the developers can connect a mouse, a keyboard, and some other USB devices).
But what if it’s not a devkit? Usually, console manufacturers don’t tend to give them some sleek design (the first Xbox dev kit looked more like a PC), but since then, they started to resemble consoles themselves. Still, we have our doubts as the middle of the device has a huge V in its centre, which might be Sony’s ways to sign that it is the fifth generation of the PlayStation. V stands for the Roman number 5.
The PlayStation 5 will launch in late 2020. Perhaps we might learn its design in February – perhaps it will be extreme. Perhaps not. Or maybe it’s just Sony trying to give us false ideas and lead us away from the real design.
