StarCraft 2’s Developers Would Like To Make StarCraft 3

One of the developers of the StarCraft 2 team revealed that the team is more than up to making a third game in the series, but they have to get the green light from Blizzard.

„The best way for us to figure out our future is to hear from players, so, I think if there’s an interest in seeing more RTS (real-time strategy) games, sending that message to Blizzard would be a wonderful thing. Ultimately, the team that works on StarCraft 2 is incredibly passionate about real-time strategy as a genre. I can certainly say it’s my favourite genre to play and so far it’s been my favourite genre to work on. I actually think there’s a great opportunity there in the future [to make StarCraft 3 happen], but yeah, we’ll just have to see what the future holds,” Tim Morton, the production director of StarCraft 2, told PCGamer at BlizzCon.

When Morton talked about the future, he probably meant that Activision Blizzard is waiting for Microsoft to release Age of Empires 4, and see how well it performs. The Redmond-based company announced the game more than two years ago, and it is developed by Relic Entertainment, who are experienced in making strategy titles. If that title becomes successful, the publisher might ask the StarCraft 2 team to get started with the third episode, but it might need a few years. (Age of Empires 4 has no release date announced yet, plus we have to add a few years to develop the game, so 2022-2023 might be the first time we’d hear officially from Blizzard that it is coming IF it happens.)

So the usual supply and demand rule stands: if there’s interest in RTS games, there will be more of them. (Including Electronic Arts’ Command & Conquer remaster, of the few upcoming, unannounced remasters in 2020.) If there won’t be interest, there’ll be no zerg rush either.
