This is one of those games, Half-Life: Alyx where upgrading your rig will be somewhat necessary for solid performance, otherwise, you’ll see some low frame rate in the experience that ties the first and the second Half-Life games together.
Let’s see what the game’s Steam page writes:
Minimum system requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 10
- Processor: Intel Core i5-7500, or AMD Ryzen 5 1600
- Memory: 12 GB RAM
- Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, or AMD Radeon RX 580
- VRAM: 6 GB
The recommended system requirements haven’t been published yet.
So far, that sounds good, but what Polygon noticed makes things interesting – the minimum system requirements are already higher than what Valve lists for its new VR headset, the Valve Index! Let’s see what Gabe Newell’s new hardware needs…
Minimum system requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 10, SteamOS, Linux (no further details…?)
- Processor: Dual Core with Hyper-Threading
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970, or AMD Radeon RX 480 (only 35% of Steam’s users have such a GPU or better…)
- Network: Broadband Internet connection
- Additional Notes: available DisplayPort (Version 1.2) and USB (2.0+) Port required
Recommended system requirements:
- Operating system: Windows 10, SteamOS, Linux
- Processor: Quad Core+
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or better (no AMD equivalent?)
- Additional Notes: available USB (3.0+) Port required for Headset Pass-Through Camera, available DisplayPort (Version 1.2) and USB (2.0+) Port required
So we can now say that Half-Life: Alyx is going to be a VR game that will require a stronger rig for proper performance, meaning you might have to break your piggy bank by the time the game launches in March. However, more performance from our PCs means Valve has a bigger space to move around with its game, and they admitted that Alyx is planned to be the beginning of their return to the franchise (we discussed this subject yesterday).
Half-Life: Alyx will be supported by the Valve Index, the HTC Vive, the Oculus Rift, the Oculus Touch (with a link cable to our PC), and Windows Mixed Reality devices.
