Sean Murray’s and Hello Games‘ work, No Man’s Sky isn’t meant to be used for such purposes, but you can still design some levels in it – and this time, a known person has done so.
We’re talking about JP LeBreton. He was one of the designers of BioShock and Broken Age, but he also made levels in a few other games (Blair Witch Volume II – The Legend of Coffin Rock [2000], Rune: Halls of Valhalla [2001], Rune: Gold [2001], Rune: Classic [2012]), plus he was behind one of the Doom mods called Mr Friendly. Now, he used No Man’s Sky, which recently got another bigger free update called Synthesis, including new floor tiles – LeBron used them to recreate something in the 2016 game that probably everybody knows.
Doom. E1M1. Yes, he remade id Software’s classic FPS’ first stage, even though No Man’s Sky isn’t meant to compete with Dreams (ex-LittleBigPlanet dev Media Molecule’s next PlayStation 4-exclusive game has been seen several times for such a purpose), but still, the video below shows an outstanding result. „In what is perhaps my most JP act of the year so far, I recreated Doom’s E1M1 in No Man’s Sky’s Creative Mode. Portal glyphs on my bases page, so you can visit if you’re playing on PC. (No demons, explore in peace!)”, LeBreton wrote on Twitter.
So while there are some hostile enemies outside (a red, radioactive planet with rocks, hmmm), E1M1 is meant to be nothing more than a sightseeing tour, so don’t expect to see demons, shotguns, or Doomguy’s grin when he gets a new weapon. LeBreton’s website has other maps as well – No Man’s Sky’s fans might find a few enjoyable moments there.
Let the video speak for itself, though… (and we’ll imagine the background music while the video plays, and the classic riffs are already playing in our heads)
