We might have never seen before that someone spends money not on (just) a car, a house, or something similar, but in Valve‘s digital store!
Duncan D. Hunter, the Republican representative of California’s 50th district in the US Congress, has been caught spending campaign funds on things he wasn’t allowed. On December 3, he pleaded guilty that between 2010 and 2016, he spent about 150 thousand dollars on his family’s lifestyle, vacations, LEGO, food, and… he also used the funds for buying games on Steam. He also gave his wife, Margaret, a campaign credit card, which was also used for non-allowed spending.
The US Attorney’s Office press release was posted on Reddit, and while only the gaming spending was mentioned, in a 2016 The San Diego Union-Tribute article, there were already talks about Hunter funnelling money on his life – in his 2015 campaign finance disclosure, he listed a 1302-dollar Steam bill, with the note that it was personal spending and that he would pay it back. When that article was published, this didn’t happen. Hunter blamed his son for that spending, saying he used it in one game, causing unauthorized charges. He got a month to rectify the issue, and we don’t know if he did or not… but he didn’t have much air to breathe by then.
A few months ago, Margaret Hunter pleaded guilty (meaning her husband left her in the dark for several months, which… isn’t a good thing to do), and the sentencing won’t happen until March 2020. Duncan D. Hunter might face up to five years in prison, as well as 250K fine (meaning he’d have to essentially pay back what he stole from the US budget because let’s face it, that’s where that money was from).
What an unusual way to use money.
