Electronic Arts game’s online portion has stayed alive for a surprisingly long period.
On Electronic Arts‘ website, we read that Fight Night Round 4‘s servers will be shut down on March 9. In case you don’t know, this boxing game was released in 2009 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It wasn’t the last game in the series, as it was followed up by Fight Night Champion in 2011, but after that, the publisher started to focus on the UFC series – back then, Andrew Wilson, the CEO of EA, told IGN that one day, the Fight Night series could make a return, but the chance of that is just as much as EA stopping using Denuvo in its games: none.
In the next fiscal year (running from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021), Electronic Arts plans to release another sports game aside from its FIFA, NFL, NHL, and NBA licenses (NBA is taking a sabbatical this year), but that’s possibly going to be UFC 4, the next title in the mixed martial arts series.
Let’s see Electronic Arts’ soulless statement: „Hello Fight Night Round 4 Fans, after eleven years of an incredible online community, the daily active player base in Fight Night Round 4 has reached a very low number and we can no longer ensure a quality online experience. As of March 9, 2020, the Fight Night Round 4 servers will be retired. After this date, you’ll still be able to play all offline modes on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Thanks for your continued support.”
Surprisingly, EA has kept the servers alive for 1.5 console generations, but still, modern games don’t deserve as much love, and the ones that require online authentication (looking at you, Need For Speed 2015…) will not be preserved this way.
