Nintendo Switch Is Over Fifty Million!

The big N’s portable platform didn’t even need three years to reach the fifty million threshold in sales!

Nintendo’s newest financial report reveals that by December 31, 52.48 million Nintendo Switch (and Nintendo Switch Lite) units have been sold. In the last quarter of 2019, 10.81 million Switches were sold. In total, 310.65 million games were bought for the Switch, so we can quickly count that on average, a Switch got 5.91 games with each console sale.

It’s such a strong result that Nintendo INCREASED its expectations! In the April 2019-March 2020 period (fiscal year), they first expected 18 million Switch sales. Now, they pushed it up to 19.5 million. It makes sense, even with the sales probably dipping in the first months of 2020 (the Holiday season rush is why the sales were so high), but there will probably be at least 1-2 million sales in this quarter. (And we didn’t even consider the new Animal Crossing game yet, which is out on March 20. It WILL push the sales!)

Nintendo has also given us an update on their first-party Switch-exclusive games’ sales. Thus, we see the first official figures of Pokémon Sword/Shield and Luigi’s Mansion 3:

  •    Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 22.96 million
  •    Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 17.68 million
  •    Super Mario Odyssey – 16.59 million
  •    The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 16.34 million
  •    Pokemon Sword / Pokemon Shield – 16.06 million
  •    Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! – 11.76 million
  •    Splatoon 2 – 9.82 million
  •    Super Mario Party – 9.12 million
  •    New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 5.85 million
  •    Luigi’s Mansion 3 – 5.37 million

A few more games:

  •    The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – 4.19 million
  •    Fire Emblem: Three Houses – 2.58 million
  •    Ring Fit Adventure – 2.17 million
  •    Astral Chain – 1.03 million
  •    Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order – 1.02 million

Congratulations to the Switch, but the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, both launching this Holiday season, will upset the trends. But until then, the Switch will dominate the sales.
