The „ice cream cone” could be getting a brand new version: we should expect a new variant of the PlayStation Move.
Sony’s patent (we see a lot of these nowadays, don’t we?) is about a controller, which looks like something you could use for the Nintendo Wii. Let’s see the description: „This controller device is worn on the hand of a user and includes: a plurality of sensor units that detect the fingers of the user; and a sensor support part that supports the sensor units. The sensor support part supports the sensor units so that the distance between adjacent sensor units can be changed.” This distance tracking on this new PlayStation Move controller (honestly, what else could it be called…?) makes sense: if there are several PlayStation VR users in the same room, it could alert the users that they should change direction before they run into each other, causing a mighty accident in the process…
The patent says the controller could be connected to us via a wrist strap (Nintendo’s Wiimote made it a successful idea, so why change it?), and there would be a trigger on the top. Vertically, there would be a sensor bar that our fingers would cover in case we grab the PlayStation Move controller. There’s also an image in the patent.
It’s probably not going to be used by the PlayStation 5 (it’s going to get the DualShock 5, which isn’t called as such… yet), but the new PlayStation VR, which would gladly take a new PlayStation Move. Sony hasn’t talked about either yet, but Bloomberg’s report (which also talked about how the PS5 will be more expensive than the PlayStation 4) has mentioned it arriving shortly after the PlayStation 5, so it’s plausible. We need time until confirmation, though, and don’t forget, not every patent is turned into a product…
The PlayStation 5 is out this Holiday season, and the PlayStation VR 2 comes shortly after it, according to Bloomberg. The new PlayStation Move could potentially come in 2021 then.
