The Capcom Japanese company wants more presence in the fighting game scene.
First, we need to explain what this Capcom Vs. series is: Capcom started to deal with Marvel’s characters in the mid-90s in this genre. Its first result was Marvel Super Heroes in 1995. The side view fighting showed up two years later, in 1997, on SEGA Saturn and PlayStation, too. In 1996, X-Men vs. Street Fighter followed. It was one of many games that had a crossover between Marvel and Capcom. It got a Saturn port (Japan-only, in ’97 November), as well as a PS1 version (in ’98). In 1997, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter continued it all (JP-only Saturn port in ’98, PS1 version in ’99).
Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes built on these games in 1998 (which got a Dreamcast version in 1999 or 2000 in Europe, same for the PS1 edition). There was also some SNK vs. Capcom (whose second game was directed by someone called Hideaki Itsuno… who was recently the director of Devil May Cry 5). There was also Tatsunoko vs. Capcom on Wii in 2008. The newest instalment in the series is 2017’s Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
So the history of Capcom Vs. is somewhat complicated, and this is why it’s interesting what Brian Hanford wrote on Twitter: „Absolutely pumped for the next #CapcomVS game!!! New characters but could be VERY familiar…”. Hanford was the voice of V in Devil May Cry 5, so he is somewhat of an insider at Capcom at the moment. But this new characters thought sounds like that there might be some people from DMC V showing up in this Vs. title.
Capcom hasn’t said anything officially yet, but due to Hanford, we should believe it. The Japanese company will be out at E3, plus Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will also be at EVO (to celebrate its 20th birthday, because indeed, Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age Heroes came out in 2000!), but they could also reveal it at the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X reveal event.
The crossover fighting has a big chance now: it could take some characters from Resident Evil or Monster Hunter, so Capcom’s roster could have a lot of newcomers in the next Vs…
