The Japanese publisher, Square Enix has confirmed that they won’t start making PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X-only games!
Square Enix has held its quarterly financial earnings briefing on February 5, and they published its recap in PDF format the other day. In it, there’s an interesting question: „Could you share your thinking on the development of new titles for current- and next-generation game consoles going forward?” The answer follows: „The next-generation consoles will have backward compatibility, so we plan for the time being to make our new titles available for both current and next-generation consoles. It will, therefore, be somewhat farther down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles.” They were also asked if (the first episode of) Final Fantasy VII Remake’s delay from March 3 to April 10 has impacted the development or the launch timelines of the next instalment, and they said no.
Okay, let’s stop here for a moment. We haven’t even heard anything next-gen from Square Enix yet, aside from Outriders! What could these next-gen-only games be? A new Final Fantasy? Okay, that sounds plausible. A new Tomb Raider? The reboot trilogy has been finished. A new Deus Ex? That seems unlikely. We have no clue! Square Enix doesn’t seem to talk about its plans – and the fact that they will likely not make a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X-exclusive game in the next one or two years just makes the situation foggier…
And if we think about it, the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake (because it’s absolutely not going to be complete in just one release…) will thus be also on PlayStation 4, as the company needs time to go next-gen exclusive. Sure, they will probably make a PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X version of Marvel’s Avengers, but it still doesn’t look promising.
